(1) Funding can solely be delivered within the foundation’s areas of action. In individual cases, the board of trustees may allow for exceptions to be made.
(2) Funding is limited to persons, who are enrolled or active within a real estate department of an institution of higher education, and/or persons, who are active within the AfRES African Real Estate Society.
(3) Applying academics, who are employed at an institution of higher education, must present a letter by the dean or head of department, which states that funding by the institution is not possible.
(4) Single funding projects can solely receive funds up to a maximum amount of $ 5,000 per annum. In individual cases, the board of trustees may allow for exceptions to be made.
(5) In almost all cases, funding can solely be delivered to the applicant on the basis of original receipts that document the applicant’s expenses. Thus, the applicant must realise that advance payments of the applicant must occur in most cases. Once the foundation has accepted an application, the foundation is obliged to cover the agreed expenses latest within 8 weeks after the receipts have been adequately presented to the foundation.
(6) Travel grants and funds for teaching stays are limited to a maximum amount of $ 1,500 per applicant. In individual cases, the board of trustees may allow for exceptions to be made.
(7) The amount to be funded for travelling and teaching stays solely covers expenses for transportation and accommodation.
(8) Travel grants are limited to AfRES board-members, students and academics. Students or academics to be sponsored must be under the age of 40. Persons to be sponsored shall not receive a current income that allows for bearing the travel expenses on own behalf. Judgement on this issue is reserved for the foundation. In individual cases, the board of trustees may allow for exceptions to be made.
(9) Prerequisite for travel grants that enable the participation at a conference is the presentation of a paper at the aforementioned conference. The foundation is entitled to release this paper on the foundation’s website and/or in a publication or journal directly or indirectly associated with AfRES or the foundation. We kindly ask that presentations and papers contain the phrase “This paper/presentation is kindly sponsored by IRE|BS Foundation for African Real Estate Research”.
(10) Prerequisite for travel grants, which enable AfRES board-members to participate at an AfRES board-meeting, is that the board-meeting takes place no later than 6 months before the upcoming AfRES conference. The board-meeting has to take place in the host country of the upcoming AfRES conference. AfRES board-members, who receive travel grants that enable the participation at an AfRES board-meeting, are obliged to present a paper at the upcoming AfRES conference.
(11) Funds for master programs can solely be granted to students applying for a master program abroad, namely at an institution situated in a country other than the applicant’s country of permanent residence. Exceptions are made for applicants with refugee status.
(12) Persons, whose academic program is sponsored by the foundation, must present if applicable:
a. A progress report by the 30th of June every year starting from the day of the acceptance of the application until the end of the funding period.
b. Term grades, as soon as these are released.
(13) In order to receive initial or continuative funding for academic programs, an A- (A minus) grade average is necessary.
(14) The foundation kindly appreciates voluntary work of persons, whose academic program is sponsored by the foundation, in the area of African real estate research.
(15) Recipients of the foundation’s Best Paper Awards are obliged to permit the release of the papers on the foundation’s website and/or in a publication or journal directly or indirectly associated with AfRES or the foundation.

(17) Applications must contain:
a. Cover letter, in which reasons, the object of funding (i.e. conference visit, academic program etc.) and dependence on funding are explicitly explained and documented.
b. List of expenses to be covered by the foundation incl. existing invoices, receipts etc.
c. Desired payment schedule.
d. Copies of passport, university diplomas and other relevant documents.
e. Bank account details.
(18) Funding of activities that can be associated to an applicant’s business purpose is not permitted.
(19) The foundation has the right to withdraw from a funding commitment, if information presented by the applicant is incorrect or if requirements (i.e. grade average) are not fulfilled. In the case of serious violation, the foundation reserves the right to claim for reimbursement of previous funds.
(20) These guidelines can be subject to change.
Code of Conduct
In the spirit of the goals of the IREBS Foundation for African Real Estate Research and in order to foster its implementation and to ensure that it is observed, the following Code of Conduct has been established.
(Please note: whenever the masculine gender is used, it refers to both male and female.)
(2) Values of the IREBS Foundation for African Real Estate Research Community
Each scholar or student who applies for or receives support by the IREBS Foundation for African Real Estate Research
– is obliged to five values that define the core ethos: Respect, Tolerance, Honesty, Responsibility and Performance, which promotes learning, teaching and research.
– is particularly committed, through conservation of natural capital, promotion of social equity and support of local economies, to creating and maintaining a healthy built and natural environment, not only for today but for future generations.
– is strongly advised to become a member of AfRES African Real Estate Society, which is partner of the IREBS Foundation for African Real Estate Research.
– is morally obliged to share his acquired knowledge within the African community.
Whereas the universities are responsible for academic misconduct, the IREBS Foundation for African Real Estate Research observes non-academic misconduct but has until now obstained from defining a catalog, from appointing a judicial board and from setting sanction proceedings in place.
If there is a reasonable suspicion that a serious breach of non-academic conduct has occurred, the Chairman of the Management Board and of the Board of Trustees will decide on sanctions to punish the misconduct and to prevent similar misconduct in the future.
We trust that the universities punish academic misconduct and that scholars and students share our values and that we do not need more detailed rules of procedure for misconduct.
